Dan has quickly become a guitarist in great demand. His skills and musical attributes, which are rarely found in a musician of his background, have helped him define his own distinct sound and calibre. His musical creativity has seen him play an integral role in many projects, spanning a wide range of musical styles, which regularly perform throughout the UK and internationally.
As well as working heavily as a session musician within the pop and gospel music industries, Daniel is a founding member in a number of contemporary jazz projects for which he also writes and arranges. These include Glowrogues and the Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley Group who are soon to release a new studio album featuring world renowned jazz saxophonist, Chris Potter. Daniel performs his own original music predominantly with his trio Apes Grapes.
In 2016 he was invited to perform as a guest musician with contemporary classical music ensemble Distractfold during their visit to Harvard University as ensemble in residence. Since then, Daniel has gone on to join the ensemble as their full time guitarist and for the past two years he has been in the active role of executive producer. This role has seen him develop valuable new organisational skills with his responsibilities including all logistics relating to concerts, recordings and residencies the group undertakes, such as booking rehearsals, travel & accommodation, venue & equipment hire, right up to submitting tax returns and managing the groups finances. Distractfold specialises in modern instrumental and electro-acoustic music and is the first UK ensemble to win the Kranichstein Prize at the 47th International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt. In 2017 they curated and co-produced the 2017 Cut and Splice Festival in collaboration with Sound and Music, BBC Radio 3 and with the support of the Arts Council England.
Recent residencies and concerts with Distractfold include:
Royaumont Abbey, Asnières-sur-Oise, France / December 2019
Bludenzer Tage Zeitgemasser Musik Festival, Austria / Oct 2019
Musica In Prossimita, Italy / Sep 2019
Global Adaptor, Berlin / July 2019
Ensemble In Residence Harvard University, US / April 2018
Ensemble In Residence Stanford University, US / March 2017
In June 2021, Distractfold will be in an ensemble in ‘Virtual Residency’ from the UK with Columbia University, New York. Daniel received his undergraduate degree from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and is profoundly grateful for the teaching and guidance of both Mauricio Pauly and Rodrigo Constanzo during his time there. Alongside his formal studies Daniel also took 1-1 lessons with internationally recognised jazz guitarist and educator Mike Walker, from whom he continues to draw much of his influence and inspiration as a player and overall musician. Soon after graduating, Daniel received a place to study with Yaron Deutsch at the 2015 Impuls Academy for Contemporary Music in Graz, Austria. Currently, having recently completed his Masters Degree, Daniel continues to play an integral role in many projects with which he regularly performs throughout the UK and Internationally.
